Compensation not yet available for Pandemrix harms

[Editor's Note: Finland's THL receives 5 million euros funding from pharmaceutical companies, including GSK, and only 1 million euros from government. The THL recommended GSK's Pandemrix to the government as a swine flu vaccine and the THL has been charged with conducting the autopsies of suspected vaccine victims. What incentive does the THL have to provide accurate information on potential damage when it will result in huge compensation claims against the company that funds it?]

The Finnish Pharmaceutical Insurance Pool told on Wednesday, that compensation is not yet to be paid for possible harmful effects of Pandemrix, swine flu vaccine.

According to the insurance pool, compensation will not be paid until a connection between the vaccine and narcolepsy is established. The research into a suspected link between the two is still ongoing.

The Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) stopped swine flu vaccinations in Finland on Tuesday as a precautionary measure. Suspicions of a connection between narcolepsy and Pandemrix began when neurologists in both Finland and Sweden noted an increase in child narcolepsy cases.

Despite the media coverage, health centres across Finland told the Finnish News Agency (STT) on Wednesday that very few people have contacted them about the suspected link.
