Finland’s National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) has suspended the use of the H1N1 vaccine over fears that the shot is linked with a 300 per cent increase in cases of the neurological disorder narcolepsy among children and young people over the last six months.

The news is sure to discourage more parents from vaccinating their children in the coming months, with the swine flu shot now being combined with the regular seasonal flu jab. A recent Rasmussen poll found that 52 per cent of Americans were concerned about the safety of vaccines as we approach the start of school and college terms, where many children and teenagers will be “required” to take shots before they can attend.

Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder that can be triggered by a virus. “A patient suffering from narcolepsy may suddenly fall asleep, for example, while, speaking or eating without prior warning. Their muscles may also suddenly weaken, causing them to suddenly collapse. There is no known cure for the disease,” reports Finnish news website YLE.

Finland’s Justice Minister opens bribery investigation into Health Ministry and THL over Pandemrix swine flu jab purchases

Finland: Chancellor of Justice is investigating if bribery was used in narcolepsy-suspect Pandemrix vaccine trade

According to Nelonen (Channel 4) news, the investigation has begun because two individuals have reported their suspicions to the Chancellor.

Investigation targets the Ministry of Health and THL, National Instute for Health and Welfare. THL has received more than six million euros last year from GlaxoSmithKline, which manufactures Pandemrix. THL has also had a key role in the decision to order Pandemrix for every Finnish citizen.

To worries that there’s a conflict of interest with THL investigating whether narcolepsy is caused by Pandemrix, the Ministry of Health has said that it trusts THL and sees no problem with the issue.

The written material which lead to the bribery investigation however also requested that the Ministry of Health’s actions should be investigated. Ministry of Health made the final decision of ordering Pandemrix.

According to Chancellor of Justice, Jaakko Jonkka, there’s no direct [ evidence to support ] suspicion of bribery, but the situation where GlaxoSmithKline has funded THL’s activities with millions of euros and THL buys vaccines from GSK is, generally speaking, a risky situation, since the seller funds the buyer. “As the old saying goes, there’s no such thing as a free lunch”

At least 15 cases of narcolepsy among children and young people in past six months

The possibility of compensations for children and young people diagnosed with narcolepsy recently is to be assessed later if a link between the disease and the swine flu vaccine is established, says Minister of Social Services Paula Risikko (Nat. Coalition Party).
      “The matter must be evaluated when all studies have been made. Experts insist that if the illnesses and the vaccinations have a connection, we will find out.”
      “I understand the pain of the families and the seriousness of the situation, but it is too early to take a stand on who has responsibility to compensate.”

The THL recommended GSK's Pandemrix to the government as a swine flu vaccine and the THL has been charged with conducting the autopsies of suspected vaccine victims. The Finnish Pharmaceutical Insurance Pool told on Wednesday, that compensation is not yet to be paid for possible harmful effects of Pandemrix, swine flu vaccine.

According to the insurance pool, compensation will not be paid until a connection between the vaccine and narcolepsy is established. The research into a suspected link between the two is still ongoing.

The Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) stopped swine flu vaccinations in Finland on Tuesday as a precautionary measure. Suspicions of a connection between narcolepsy and Pandemrix began when neurologists in both Finland and Sweden noted an increase in child narcolepsy cases.

Despite the media coverage, health centres across Finland told the Finnish News Agency (STT) on Wednesday that very few people have contacted them about the suspected link.

FARMER GIVEN UP FOR DEAD BY HOSPITAL AFTER GETTING SWINE FLU SAVED BY INTRAVENOUS VITAMIN C

A New Zealand dairy farmer who caught swine flu and very nearly died was saved after his family insisted that he be treated with intravenous vitamin C.

Believing there ws no hope, medical staff were about to take the farmer off the life support systems. But his three sons insisted the doctors try high doses of Vitamin C, and even hired a top lawyer to push the treatment through against the wishes of the doctors.

The farmer made a rapid recovery, improving within just two days of treatment with the vitamin C infusions – costing only about 30 dollars –, and is now back working on his farm, reports New Zealand TV “60 Minutes”.

WHO involved in major pandemic exercise in Asia

Senior experts from Southeast Asian nations met in Cambodia on Monday to discuss preparations for major pandemics that can cause huge losses of life and disruption to the region.

More than 100 high-level participants from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), UN agencies and international bodies, including the World Health Organisation, attended the five-day regional event, the first of its kind.

The exercise aims to improve the capabilities of ASEAN member states, both individually and collectively, to prepare for and respond to a severe pandemic with potentially devastating effects on the region, according to officials.

Irish woman to sue GSK over vaccine trials

Calls for closure to vaccine scandal

The Government must bring closure to victims of the vaccine scandals of the 1960s and 1970s, Fine Gael Deputy Denis Naughten said today.

The call came after it emerged that a woman adopted from Ireland in 1961, who was involved in a vaccine trial as a baby without the permission of her mother, is to take legal action against the drugs company involved.

Mari Steed (50), who now lives in the US, is to take action along with three others against Glaxosmithkline, known as “The Wellcome Foundation” at the time the trials were conducted.
Ms Steed was administered the experimental vaccine while at the Sacred Heart Convent, Bessborough, Co Cork between December 1960 and October 1961 when she was between nine and 18 months old. She is also to bring legal action against the Sacred Heart Order in the Irish courts, according to the Irish Independent.

Mass graves plan if pandemic hits Wales

MASS graves, round-the-clock cremations and express funerals could all be used if a deadly flu pandemic sweeps across Wales, we can reveal today.

A report by the Assembly Government estimates that in a worst-case scenario the Welsh death toll could be close to 40,000. One politician last night said the document was not made public a year ago for fear of causing panic during the swine flu outbreak.

Details of the Wales Mass Fatalities Plan (Emerging Incidents) have been disclosed for the first time following a Freedom of Information request by the Western Mail.

It comes just days after the swine flu pandemic, which sparked widespread panic last year, was declared over by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
