Austrian journalism association sets up hotline for persecuted journalists

The Austrian Journalism Club  yesterday set up an emergency hotline for journalists who find themselves summoned to illegal interrogations by state prosecutors or who are subjected to other illegal pressures in respect of their work.

This follows a series of incidents that have sparked concern that the Austrian justice system is being instrumentalized to silence investigative journalists uncovering bank fraud scandals involving high-ranking politicians.

Last week, it emerged that German state prosecutors requested Austrian prosecutors to summon Austrian journalists investigating the Hypo Alpe Adria bank scandal for an interrogation as a first step to charging them for actions that are crimes in Germany but not in Austria.

An independent “network of critical journalists” has also been set up for support purposes and to create awareness in the general public about the current risks to press freedom posed by the actions of justice officials.
