Health officials in Liberia reported that a teenage boy from Ebola, making him the first victim to succumb to the disease in months.
Francis Kateh, chief medical officer of Liberia, said that 15-year-old Nathan Gbotoe died on Monday in a Paynesville medical facility only a few days after he tested positive for Ebola. His father and brother are being treated for Ebola.
Health authorities have placed 153 people under monitoring, including 22 nurses and six patients from a hospital in the country’s capital, Monrovia.
It is not clear how the 15-year-old teen contracted Ebola since the country has been declared officially free of the disease for two months.
Liberia’s Health Minister Francis Kateh said Liberia had requested the assistance of the United States to determine the cause of the disease. At least two officials from the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention will travel to Liberia to help determine the cause of the resurgence of the disease, he added.
