The government of Greece has selected Xeni Dimitriou as the new chief criminal prosecutor at the Supreme Court.
Dimitriou was chosen from a short list of its six candidates hand picked by the Ministry of Justice.
She will take up her position at the Supreme Court on July 1st.
The political influence that the Greek government, mired in corruption scandals, has had on the choice of the new top criminal prosecutor will fuel fears that country’s criminal justice system will be further undermined.
Ensuring that Greece has some kind of independent judiciary should be a priority reform measure.
