Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel said today that other European nations have to be stopped from leaving the EU.
Merkel did not go into details about how she planned to stop other nations from leaving the EU. But Merkel’s statement implying sovereign nations will not be free to decide whether to belong to the EU or not will fuel fears her approach is becoming increasingly authoritarian.
Leading politicians in several European countries have now called for a referendum.
Recent polls show the majority of French and Italians want to have a vote on leaving the EU, and France’s most popular politician Marine Le Pen has promised the French a referendum if she is elected president next year.
