Am I am armchair chess player? Kind of. I haven’t had the time and energy to play chess for yonks.

But I did easily beat a close relative of British chess grandmaster Adrian Hollis when I was in the monastery of St John the Forerunner in Greece. That is, essential witness Theoktisti Emsley, the niece of Bishop Crispian Hollis.

I cannot say it was a close fought game. Even though Theoktisti played chess in Oxford clubs until age 15 years old (she is an Oxford grad) she hadn’t played for about 50 years. It showed in her opening moves…By the middle game, it was over (usually total defeat comes in the end game when there are just a few pieces on the board).

So, no, dear reader, if someone challenges me to a game of chess, I am not an armchair chess player. I will get out of my comfort zone, put the pieces on the chess board, play a competitive opponent, and I will win that game.
