An extraordinary result. Establishment candidate Alexander van der Bellen made significant gains compared to the May elections to win the presidential election according to the first projections.
Van der Bellen got 53,6 % of the vote while Hofer got 46,4 %, far ahead of the marginal 31,000 votes in May 22nd.
Postal votes will be counted tomorrow when the final result will be known.
After voting irregularities were proven in the May 22 presidential election and the first scheduled re run (glueless envelopes), Austrians may well be asking how this result came about if it does stand. There is no need to make so much effort to steal an election if a candidate is really so far in the lead as this projection puts Van der Bellen.
Meanwhile, the result from the Italian referendum is due in soon.
