A viral video showing that Austrian presidential candidate Alexander van der Bellen was lagging 7% behind Norber Hofer in the first official projections broadcast immediately after polls closed on Sunday has fuelled fears of election fraud.
At the point when the clip of the press pool watching the results in the Hofburg was filmed, at 17.01 local Austrian time, 2.3 million votes had been counted, around two thirds of the total votes, according to Staatsstreich blog.
Der Standard newspaper says half the votes had been counted at this point, but claims these were all from the non urban areas which lean towards Hofer, skewering the result.
Also, it claims the figures were not a first projection but the absolute result of all the votes counted at that point.
However, the commentator in the Euronews clip can clearly be heard saying in German that he is announcing the first projection, and not the result of all the votes counted so far. On this blog, I also said the first projections were to be expected just after 5 pm.
The commentator says Hofer is leading by 53.5% and Van der Bellen has 46% in the first projection. The commentator notes that Van der Bellen had only a marginal lead at this point in May . He adds the end result can still change slightly. Slightly.
Yet, just over 10 minutes minutes later, van der Bellen was declared the winner by the state run ORF TV channel and by a huge margin.
Hagan Grell suspects a media coup…
Just how another fraud may have occurred is not yet clear. It may be that the totals from the various districts were not aggregated correctly or that ballots were stuffed into boxes as appears to have happened in Michigan.
Readers of my blog will know that my computer and WIFI were hacked when I tried to put up a link to the live stream of the Austrian elections on Sunday, something I was able to prove with screenshots. As a result I was prevented from watching the livestream of the results or reporting on them.
At any rate, Norbert Hofer was incredibly quick to concede defeat on facebook. Hofer has to go and the Freedom Party should carefully study the evidence and take legal action if it finds indications of fraud yet again.
The video has already been seen by more than 114,000 people on youtube according to the official number. But the real number is likely far higher. Given the extent to which algorithms and bots are being used to manipulate rankings, it may well be the top video in Austria right now in the past year.
Der Standard labels the video “fake” even though it does not deny it is a genuine video.
