Andrew McCabe, the FBI deputy director, was installed overnight as the acting director after President Trump’s fired Director James Comey.
McCabe is set to testify today to the Senate Intelligence Commitee.
The Senate has to confirm any new director nominated by Trump for the FBI post.
Trump is moving rapidly to circumvent scruntiny and appoint an interim director, who will be in a position to quash the investigation into his Russia ties.
It is not clear if Senate and other rules allow Trump to appoint someone on an interim basis who does not need confirmation from the Senate for the key post of FBI director.
