New York Times correspondent Glenn Thrush said on Wednesday that White House sources told him Donald Trump improvised the “fire and fury” comment.
Thrush added in a tweet that the new White House Chief of Staff John Kelly was “surprised,” but not shocked.
Kelly is with Trump during his 17-day vacation.
Trump’s improvised remarks during a press conference came after Kelly cracked down on Trump’s policy announcements on Twitter, according to reports.
“While Kelly acknowledges he can’t stop Trump from tweeting, the new chief of staff would like to know what the president plans to tweet before he does so. He would prefer big policy decisions not be announced on Twitter.”
