As school children stayed away in mass from schools in Madagascar amid fears of a forced plague vaccine campaign, the website of the Institut Pasteur in France confirms there is no vaccine for the plague.
“Prevention by vaccine was abandoned because the first vaccines had undesirable effects, sometimes severe. Furthermore, other vaccines were developed bu tthey were not effective on pneumonic forms. At the moment, several vaccines are the subject of studies but still have to be validated in people,” says the website.
The Institut Pasteur also has a branch in Madagascar.
